Democracy from the Ground Up: Community Grassroots Politics and Future Directions

Join us for a roundtable conversation with three Phoenix-based community organizers as they take stock of 2022 and discuss ongoing efforts to combat racism, antisemitism and environmental injustice while building a more just and inclusive community in Arizona and beyond.

Parliamentarian & Social Media Communications Chair, NAACP Maricopa County Branch

Since 1919, the Maricopa County Branch of the NAACP has been fulfilling the promise of equal rights for all people by fighting for and addressing civil rights issues in Maricopa County. Today, the branch is proud to carry on the goals and objectives of the NAACP National Office and continues to be active in advocating equality for all citizens.

Over the years, the Maricopa County Branch of NAACP has made great strides to increase its membership and to advance the mission to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.

Ministry of Education, Black Lives Matter Phoenix Metro

Black Lives Matter Phoenix Metro is a Black, Queer and Femme-led organization that centers Black people, who are the most impacted and marginalized, because they believe ALL BLACK LIVES MATTER. They build solidarities with other colonized folks in the Global South to end imperial rule. They work towards Black Liberation by practicing abolition to seek true freedom of mind, body and community.

Arizona State Director, Mi Familia Vota

Mi Familia Vota is a national civic engagement non-profit organization that unites Latino, immigrant and allied communities to promote social and economic justice through citizenship workshops, voter registration and voter participation. Mi Familia Vota has operations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Nevada and Texas.

Rabbi Dr. Shmuly Yanklowitz
President & Dean of the Valley Beit Midrash, the founder of Arizona Jews for Jews for Justice, and the author of 23 books on Jewish ethics. Newsweek named Rav Shmuly one of the top 50 rabbis in America and the Forward named him one of the 50 most influential Jews.

Arizona Jews For Justice, a program of Valley Beit Midrash, is a pluralistic Jewish group that provides a forum for Jews in Arizona to collaborate and foster social justice within our state. Their hope is to connect community members and empower them to create positive change within our community.
