Phoenix Democratic Socialists of America – How Can We Defend against the Impending Eviction Crisis?
December 10, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
The national moratorium on most evictions ends at the end of the year, and if nothing is done an estimated 30-40 million people will face eviction in the midst of a new wave of the pandemic. What can be done to stop this, or reverse it if it gets underway? What political options or opportunities might we expect in such an unprecedented situation and the new wave of radicalization that would be sure to come with it? And, on the grassroots level, what can be done to defend against the evictions?
Join Phoenix DSA as we discuss the impending eviction crisis, and how we might best politically respond to it. As an activist in housing justice and tenant rights, as well as a member of Phoenix DSA’s Executive Committee (our chapter’s highest body of leadership), Brianna Westbrook will lead us off, along with another member of the housing justice group “HIP”. Following her presentation, we will open the floor to general discussion for the remainder of the event.
As preparation, the Phoenix Political Education Committee recommends reading a few articles representing different views on the subject before the event:
