Phoenix Democratic Socialists of America – Reform or Revolution? Round 3 – Marxist Classics Reading Group
October 15 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Join Phoenix DSA and the IMT for another session of our Marxist Classics Reading Group, generally the 2nd Thursday of every month. This time we are continuing to read/discuss “Reform or Revolution?”, a famous polemic in which Rosa Luxemburg brilliantly explains why capitalism cannot overcome its internal contradictions, and why revolution is a necessary step toward socialism. It is directed mainly against her contemporary Eduard Bernstein, who was arguing that Marxism needed to be “updated” and that socialism could instead be reached by a parliamentary road through a series of reforms. Most debates over these questions take on parallel forms today, and the pamphlet remains a classic explanation of the Marxist view on the issue.
We are taking this reading in 3 chunks, and this is the final leg. This time, we will cover chapters 7-10, available online here: https://www.marxists.org/…/luxe…/1900/reform-revolution/
There will be a presentation to give context and a summary of the material before we open up for general discussion. Everyone is encouraged to read in preparation for the event but all are welcome even if you haven’t had the time!
