Sierra Club – Grand Canyon (Arizona) Chapter – Respect Great Bend
June 1 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Join us for a presentation on the Great Bend of the Gila with Skylar Begay of Archaeology Southwest. For more than a decade, various advocacy groups have been seeking permanent federal protection for a landscape known as the Great Bend of the Gila. This section of the lower Gila River between Phoenix and Yuma, AZ is an extraordinary nexus of cultural, natural, and historical significance. The Great Bend of the Gila, or GBG for short, has been the home of Indigenous Peoples for millennia. It is home to many iconic species of the Sonoran Desert, some of which are endangered. It is also a unique Sonoran Desert landscape shaped by volcanic forces as well as the Gila River itself. This presentation will cover some of the histories of the protection effort, what has happened in the past few years to revitalize that effort, why this place is deserving and in need of permanent protection, and the state and goals of the most current campaign: Respect Great Bend.
Skylar was born on the Navajo Nation where he is an enrolled member, though he has Mandan and Hidatsa ancestry as well.
He grew up in Northern Arizona and calls Flagstaff, Arizona home, but currently resides in Tucson where he works with Archaeology Southwest as Tribal Outreach Fellow. Together, with ASW and its collaborators, Skylar works on gaining permanent federal protections for the Great Bend of the Gila.
